Boots that will add some color and diversity to your wardrobe, but versatile enough that you'll find yourself reaching for them again and again.
Thursday Boots is a company based in New York City, New York that is committed making "ridiculously high quality footwear at honest prices that could handle busy lives in New York City." This is my review of their new Midnight & Brown Captain boots.
“ Ridiculously high quality footwear at honest prices.”
I discovered Thursday about a year ago when I decided to really begin shopping for boots. I joined the r/goodyearwelt reddit group, watched a few thousand unboxing videos, and read some reviews. I quickly discovered that (1) there are a lot of great options out there and (2) my wallet couldn't begin to handle all of the boots I wanted. That's why Thursday caught my eye. Here was a new company with an obvious commitment to quality who was selling boots at half the price of similar competitors. So, in March of 2018, I put down $199 on some of Thursday's President boots in Horween natural.
Now, six months later, I've learned a few things, walked a few miles and bought a new pair of Thursday's. Here's a few thoughts from that time and my take on one of Thursday's newest releases.
The Boots
The Midnight & Brown Captains are Thursday's newest addition to their line of cap-toed "Captain" boots. These Goodyear welted boots feature a weatherproof sued upper with Thursday Chrome on the toe and heel. The lining is a soft glove leather with a cork bed insole and DuraEVA comfort strip. The suede reads as a dark navy and looks great next to khaki, olive, and denim. Thursday uses two different kinds of leather in their boots: Horween leather from the famed, 100+ year-old Horween Leather Company, and a proprietary leather from the Le Farc tannery in Mexico called Thursday Chrome. While I prefer Horween leather based on my personal experience and its impeccable reputation, I've been pleasantly surprised by the Thursday Chrome and have no issues with it in the first few weeks. Time will tell if it wears as nice as the Chromexcel.

Sizing
One of my only complaints with Thursday is that their website says (or at one point said) that their boots fit true to size. I wear a US 10.5 in most shoes, but when I bought my first pair of Frye's I sized down to a 10. I did the same thing with the natural President's that I bought back in March, but after breaking the boots in I found that they started to fit a little loose and I now have to wear thicker wool socks with them. With that experience in mind I order two pairs of the Midnight & Brown captains - one in a US 10 and one in a 9.5. Upon receiving the order the 10 felt like a good broken in boot while the 9.5 fit a little on the tight side, like a firm handshake.
Knowing a little better now, I returned the 10's and I've been wearing the 9.5's for about 3 weeks. The first week was fairly uncomfortable, but about halfway through the second week the boots started to break in and now they fit like a dream. Every foot is different and sizing ranges across the board, so I would recommend sizing down at least a half size but leaving yourself open to sizing down 1 to 1 1/2 sizes down.
Conclusion
I'm very impressed with this boot. I was a little worried when I first ordered this pair that they would be a little too loud or flashy. In the last few weeks, however, I've found these boots to be versatile enough to wear to work, on a night out, or just for kicking around the city.
